Does Creatine Cause Anxiety?

In recent weeks there's been a flurry of Reddit posts with users on various workout, health and supplement SubReddits reporting that creatine is causing them increased anxiety, trouble sleeping and even panic attacks. Initially many Redditors responding to these posts wrote off this side effect as a fluke or anecdotal experience however so many of these posts have been posted its led to other posts asking "What's this talk of creatine causing anxiety?"

We wanted to get to the bottom of this so we did some digging, looked at various studies, and as it turns out there have been at least two documented human studies as well as an animal study showing that creatine can cause negative changes in mood or anxiety following supplementation with creatine.

WebMD also reports anxiety being a potential side effect of creatine and LiveStrong did a piece back in 2023 titled "What We Know About the Link Between Creatine and Anxiety

So yes, it's not just a rumor or a few fluke users, in addition to lots of anecdotal evidence, there's two human studies and an animal study showing that creatine does in fact cause anxiety and in some cases increased aggression. The good news is that this seems to happen in a relatively small number of users and it seems to be more common when high dosages of creatine are taken ie 25 grams per day. This is typically a dose associated with a loading phase so if you're feeling anxious after taking creatine either skip the loading phase with creatine monohydrate or use another form of creatine like Creatine Nitrate or Creatine HCL which doesn't require a loading phase.
