PhenQ Diet Pills Review and Product Overview
One of the hottest and best selling categories of the supplement industry has always been weight loss supplements and diet pills and that still holds true today. Recently one of the hottest and most talked about diet pills on the market is a product called PhenQ which is put out by Wolfson Brands, a well known UK Company. PhenQ is a diet and weight loss supplement which promises users it will help reduce their appetite and cravings, increase thermogenesis ie raise your body heat to burn more calories, and improve energy levels and workouts. In today's post we're going to take a look at PhenQ, give you an overview of the ingredients, have they selected good ingredients, are they well dosed, and does this product work? We'll also be giving you our review after having tried PhenQ for 30 days and we'll answer some commonly asked questions about PhenQ.
DO DIET PILLS ACTUALLY WORK?
So before we get into looking specifically at PhenQ, let's look at diet pills or weight loss supplements as a whole, do they actually work or is it all marketing mumbo jumbo? Here's the thing about diet supplements, yes they can help you on your weight loss journey, however they are not a magic pill. Most diet pills are heavy stimulants and as we know stimulants like caffeine found in coffee do help to curb the appetite, do give you increased energy, and do raise your body heat and help to burn more calories, anyone who's a coffee drinker can attest to that. Diet pills like PhenQ however are not magic pills, though they can help you on your journey. You can't be inactive, eat junk food and hope to lose weight, however taking a diet pill can help to curb your appetite and cravings, it can help provide you with more energy which in turn should allow you to be more active, and ingredients like caffeine and other stimulants, as well as ingredients like Carnitine, CLA and others can help your body more efficiently use nutrients, burn more calories, and burn more fat, though only to a degree. Diet pills can give you an extra push on your weight loss journey but ultimately it really does come down to eating at a calorie deficit and staying active and working out.
WHAT IS PHENQ?
PhenQ is a diet or weight loss supplement put out by UK Company Wolfson Brands. The products goal is to help those looking to lose weight, and PhenQ promises to help reduce your appetite and help curb cravings, helps to increase body heat, metabolism and calories burned, and to improve your energy levels to allow you to spend more time in the gym and have better workouts. But does it actually work or is it all hype? In today's post we'll be attempting to answer that question as well as giving you our review and our experience using PhenQ for a period of 30 days, we'll share with you our experience, our review and our before and after results.
Now when you look online for PhenQ, one thing which is somewhat concerning is there aren't many large well known supplement retailers selling this product which puts up some alarm bells. Another thing which is somewhat concerning is it's tough to find the ingredients listed on most sites selling it. This is concerning because users of a product want to know what's in it. Another thing we noticed is that there seem to be a few different variations of PhenQ floating around, it appears at some point they've reformulated it, however various different retailers are selling various different versions of PhenQ pills. The photo below is the ingredients and supplement facts panel on the version we purchased. This version contains Calcium Carbonate, Caffeine Anhydrous, L-Carnitine Fumarate, a-Lacy, Nopal, Magnesium Stearate, Capsicum Extract, Sipernat, Niacin Powder, Piperine Extract, and Chromium Picolinate. We have however seen other versions with a less robust ingredient profile, another version we found online contained Caffeine Anhydrous, Calcium, a Capsimax Plus Blend of caffeine, capsicum, niacin, and black pepper fruit, Chromium Picolinate, L-Carnitine Fumarate and Nopal Cactus.
We'll do a full ingredient breakdown below and tell you about the dosages of these ingredients and what these ingredients are aiming to accomplish, however just looking at the formula, many of these ingredients haven't been clinically studied in regards to weight loss, or have been clinically studied in weight loss but haven't shown impressive results. This supplement also appears to be somewhat underdosed.
PHENQ INGREDIENT BREAKDOWN
Calcium Carbonate
Calcium Carbonate is a mineral which makes up more than 4% of the Earth's crust and is found throughout the world, it's most common form is chalk. Calcium Carbonate has been studied in regards to weight loss and it's been shown to provide a small increase in thermogenesis or raising the bodies core temperature which will help burn more calories, this can also help burn metabolism however it only has a minor effect
Caffeine Anhydrous
Caffeine Anhydrous is an artificial lab created form of caffeine. Caffeine is helpful in increasing energy levels, providing a mood boost and providing appetite suppression. The formula of PhenQ includes 100mg of caffeine which is the same amount of caffeine in Lipodrene, where PhenQ differs from other popular fat burners, PhenQ does not contain any other stimulants to support the caffeine, where as other popular fat burners on the market will contain other stimulants such as DMHA, Higenamine, Hordenine, Theobromine and other stimulants to help the caffeine do it's job. 100mg of caffeine is about that of a diner sized cup of coffee.
L-Carnitine Fumarate
L-Carnitine Fumarate is a form of Carnitine which helps the body use food taken in as energy as opposed to being stored as fat. L-Carnitine is a clinically studied and effective weight loss ingredient, however PhenQ appears to be heavily underdosed. PhenQ contains 142.5mg of L-Carnitine Purmarate where as other popular Carnitine supplements on the market contain upwards of 2500mg of L-Carnitine and oftentimes various forms of Carnitine. A clinical dose of carnitine is 2000mg to 6000mg so PhenQ is heavily underdosed and you will therefore receive little to no benefit from the carnitine in this supplement.
a-Lacy
a-Lacy is a patented branded version of ALA or Alpha Lipoic Acid. ALA is an antioxidant made naturally in the body and found in foods, however ALA has only been found to "slightly" impact weight loss according to a number of studies. Not only does ALA only provide a minor benefit in regards to weight loss but this ingredient is heavily underdosed. A clinical dose of ALA is 1800mg per day and PhenQ contains only 25mg of a-Lacy per serving.
Nopal
Nopal is a common name for the Prickly Pear Cactus, also known as the Opunitia Cacti which is known for its large pads and decorative flowers. Nopal has been shown in studies to support weight loss and to help reduce appetite and control blood sugar levels, it also help with fat metabolization. This like other ingredients in PhenQ however is underdosed. Most clinical studies and most stand alone Nopal supplements contain 500mg of Nopal per serving however PhenQ only contains 20mg of Nopal. While this is a good ingredient for weight loss, PhenQ does not contain enough Nopal to actually give you the benefits of this ingredient.
Magnesium Stearate
Magnesium Stearte is a salt that forms when stearate molecules bond to a magnesium ion. This ingredient is not for weight loss, it helps improve the consistency and quality control of supplements and medications so it's essentially a filler.
Capsicum Extract
Capsicum is an herbal extract which has been shown to help activate thermogenesis and increase metabolism without increasing heart rate and blood pressure so it does help to support weight loss. This is one ingredient which is well dosed, for weight loss generally 2mg to 6mg of Capsicum is recommended for weight loss and PhenQ does contain a hefty dose of 8mg of Capsicum Extract.
Sipernat 22S
Sipernat22 is silica with a high absorption capacity and is used as an anticaking ingredient in supplements and medications. This ingredient has no benefit for weight loss and is a filler.
Niacin Powder
Niacin is also known as Vitamin B3. Clinical studies have shown that taking Niacin does not help with weight loss nor does it offer a special boost in energy levels so there's little benefit to this ingredient in this formula
Piperine Extract
Piperine Extract is an active alkaloid of piperine a fruit from the palnt of Piper Nigrum. Piperine Extact was shown in one study to help increase a reduction in body weight by 12-15% compared to the control group. Unfortunately PhenQ appears to be underdosed in this ingredient as well. PhenQ contains 3mg of Piperine where as most clinical studies used 15mg to 30mg of Piperine and the studies that showed the most success used 30mg of Piperine.
Chromium Picolinate
Chromium Picolinate is the form of chromium typically found in dietary supplemetns and it's believed to help improve the bodies response to insulin and to help lower blood sugar in those with diabetes. Studies however have found that Chromium Picolinate is not effective at producing a meaningful weight loss in overweight or obese individuals. Not only does this ingredient not support weight loss, but most chromium supplements contain about 200mcg of Chromium Picolinate where as the formula behind PhenQ only contains 80mcg of Chromium
REVIEW: MY EXPERIENCE TAKING PHENQ
I purchased a bottle of PhenQ and took PhenQ for a month. I've taken diet pills and weight loss supplements in the past and on average I'm typically able to lose about 2 pounds a week during a cut and while taking a weight loss supplement, of course I'm not just taking the pills, I'm also eating clean and at a caloric deficit and I'm training in the gym at least 5 days per week. During the month I took PhenQ I wound up losing 1.6 pounds, and I credit most of that to my eating habits and the time I spent in the gym and not this supplement. With many weight loss supplements I can feel the stimulants, the stimulants help keep me active and alert and help with cognition while dieting, they also tend to provide me with more energy to continue to workout and spend time in the gym, and I can oftentimes feel the increased thermogenesis, I can feel my body heat rising and I tend to sweat more. While I felt a slight bit of energy from the 100mg of caffeine anhydrous, it wasn't a substantial amount of energy, it wore off quickly, and it did not raise my body heat or make me sweat, nor did it help substantially with appetite suppression. I'll concede I may have gotten a slight benefit from using PhenQ, however it'd definitely not worth the $40 it costs and there's much better supplements on the market in terms of the formulas and ingredients used as well as the dosages.
DOES PHENQ WORK FOR WEIGHT LOSS?
So now what you all want to know, does PhenQ actually help you lose weight? Unfortunately my answer to that would be. While it does contain some ingredients which have been shown to support weight loss, the formula isn't that impressive and nearly all the ingredients are underdosed to the point that you'll likely get little to no benefit from taking them. If you wind up losing weight while taking PhenQ I would chalk it up to a good diet and staying active and not PhenQ.
HOW DOES PHENQ COMPARE TO OTHER DIET PILLS?
PhenQ is pretty unimpressive when compared to other diet pills on the market, even those at the same price point. In this section we'll be comparing PhenQ to Lipodrene the hottest selling fat burner on the market with over a Billion Tablets Sold Worldwide, as well as Condemned Labs Arsynist, formerly known as Arsyn, which is a newer fat burner but one of the most popular and most effective on the market today.
Let's take a look at Arsynist by Condemened Labz. Not only does Arsynist contain many more active ingredients than PhenQ, it contains a ton more stimulants to support appetite suppression, energy levels, and thermogenesis, and it's well dosed. Condemned Labz Arsynist contains a fully transparent label so we know exactly what's in it, and it contains powerful stimulants like DMHA, also known as 2-aminoisoheptane, caffeine, higenamine, hordenine, and other stimulants. In terms of dosages Arsynist has some of the highest dosages of stimulants of any fat burner on the market. It also has clinical dosages of ingredients proven to support weight loss such as Green Tea Powder, Grapefruit Extract, and Vinpocetine. It also contains a full 3 grams of Yohimbine to support appetite suppression, energy levels, and to get you sweating.
If we compare PhenQ to Lipodrene we see the same thing. Lipodrene does contain a proprietary blend so we don't know the exact dosages of the ingredients contained in Lipodrene, however we do know that the blend contains 560mg of active ingredients with the first and most heavily dosed ingredient being Ephedra Extract. It also contains proven ingredients like Senegalia Berlandieri, Phenylethylmaine, Methylsynephrine, along with DMHA, Caffeine and a host of other ingredients which have been clinically shown to support weight loss.
Overall when looking at PhenQ and other popular diet supplements on the market, most other weight loss supplements even at the same price point appear to contain better formulas and ingredient profiles and better dosages of said ingredients.
IS PHENQ SAFE TO TAKE?
Yes, PhenQ does appear to be safe to take, there's nothing in PhenQ which is dangerous and the formula appears to be safe, however that said most users likely won't see much benefit from taking PhenQ for weight loss.
IS PHENQ FDA APPROVED?
Phen Q is not FDA approved, however no dietary supplements are FDA approved so that's not a strike against PhenQ. The important thing to consider when examining supplements is whether the supplements have been third party tested. It does appear that PhenQ is third party tested, however we cannot confirm through which organization or lab this was done through. 3rd party testing of supplements basically are a third party test in which an unbiased third party company confirms that the ingredients stated on a bottle are actually present in a supplement with no additional ingredients that aren't supposed to bet here.
WHERE CAN I BUY PHENQ
PhenQ is sold on the PhenQ website for $69.99 for a single bottle, or $139.99 for a three pack where you're buying 2 bottles and getting a third bottle free which brings the price down to $46.66 per bottle. We were able to find PhenQ available on other supplement retailers websites and even the Walmart.Com website by a third party seller for around $39.99 per bottle. Keep in mind however oftentimes when purchasing supplements on third party platforms like Amazon or Walmart, these supplements are oftentimes found to be either counterfeit or knockoffs or supplements which are beyond their expiration date.
DOES PHENQ HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?
Like most medications and supplements on the market, they almost always contain some uncommon but potential side effects. Side effects of PhenQ include headaches, restlessness, nausea, and upset stomach. It's recommended to take PhenQ with food to avoid side effects. Overall the formula behind PhenQ does not contain any dangerous or harmful ingredients and the dosages are pretty mild so side effects should be rare.
WHAT ARE SOME PHENQ ALTERNATIVES
Fat Burners are one of the most popular categories of the dietary supplement and sports nutrition industry so there's no shortage of products in this category. When choosing a fat burner it's important to consider what you're primary goals are, or the areas where you need assistance. Again fat burners and weight loss pills are not magic pills, they are intended to provide you with a slight bit of an edge on your weight loss journey. What's your biggest challenge when it comes to losing weight? Do you have a big appetite or do you succumb to cravings? If so you may want to consider a fat burner like Alpha Lion Cravings Killer who's main focus is helping shutdown your appetite and cravings. If energy levels are your biggest concern you may want to checkout something like Condemned Labz Arsynist or Innovative Labs Hellfire. On the other hand if you're sensitive to stimulants you may want to avoid the stim fat burners and stick to a non-stim option like I-Prevails T2 Fat Burner Non-Stimulant, an L-Carnitine supplement or a CLA supplement.
