The Top 10 New Year's Resolutions for 2023
So that time of year is upon us, Christmas is days away and the New Year is right around the corner leaving many trying to think of which areas of their life they'd like to improve in 2023. Most people aren't successful with their New Year's Resolutions, 75% are successful one week in, however within 6 months only 46% of people are still keeping up with their New Year's Resolution. I was actually quite surprised to see that many people were still keeping up with their goals for the new year.
In today's post we're going to be discussing the Top 10 Most Popular New Year's Resolutions. Most center around health and fitness, if it's not working out, eating better, or losing weight, most New Year's Resolutions center around picking up a new skill, reading more, taking on a new hobby, or something like quitting smoke. If you're looking for some ideas for your New Year's Resolution for 2023, here's the 10 most popular for 2023.
10 MOST POPULAR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS FOR 2023
1. EXERCISE MORE
Exercise is important to our overall health and staying youthful, energetic and active. When it comes to working out more in the new year it's important to set actionable goals or resolutions, and it's important to choose a goal which is not only actionable but measurable. Simply saying I want to exercise more isn't enough, what does that even mean? If you don't currently workout, hitting the gym one time on January 2 would technically be exercising more. A better goal would be something like I want to workout at least 3 times per week for an hour per session. That is something you can measure, and it's something you're either successful with or your not. If you have a busy career, kids or a busy life and you can't necessarily workout 5 days a week or 3 days a week you could set a goal like I want to run or walk 10 miles per week. You can knock out that 10 miles whenever and however you like be it one session or daily, but you have to meet that goal. Keeping your fitness and workout resolutions actionable and measurable will go a long way in making sure you're successful with them.
2. LOSE WEIGHT
Having a New Years Resolution of losing weight is similar to having one of "working out more" it doesn't mean much without giving specific goals to it. Do you want to follow a certain diet be that a vegan or vegetarian diet, a whole 30 diet, or limiting calories to say 1500 calories per day? Are you going to achieve your weight loss goals through a combination of working out and eating healthier or following a diet? If you're goal is to lose weight you'll likely want to eat at a caloric deficit so figure out an amount of calories you want to eat each day. You may also want to integrate a specific diet, or at least meal planning to make sure you don't get busy or lazy and fall back into old habits.
3. GET ORGANIZED
We've all heard the old phrase messy room messy mind. Many people want to get organized to have more control over their lives. Like the above two goals, make sure to set some specific goals in terms of what getting organized means. It could mean cleaning up a junk drawer, getting your paperwork and files in order, or using a calendar or organizer and planning out your days better.
4. LEARN A NEW SKILL OR HOBBY
Learning a new skill or hobby can be something you do just for fun or just to be a more well rounded person. Learning a new skill could be getting into drawing or building model planes. Learning a new skill could tie into a fitness goal, maybe you want to learn how to play volleyball, take up yoga, or start paddleboarding. Learning a new skill could also be taking on some type of hobby which you're able to monetize and achieve some financial goal through as well, this could be learning web design or SEO or graphic design, some skill which can be monetized or improve your career.
5. LIVE LIFE TO THE FULLEST
Okay, so you're likely seeing a pattern here, most New Year's Resolutions are great ideas and great in concept, but don't actually mean much without specifics. What does living life to the fullest mean to you? Does it mean spending less time working and more time with friends and family? Does it mean traveling more and seeing more of the world? Putting yourself out there by joining a meetup group or sports team? Decide what a full life looks like to you and set some type of actionable and measurable goal in terms of how to get that in your life.
6. SAVE MORE MONEY OR SPEND LESS MONEY
There's two ways to save more money, you can spend less, or you can make more. Try to do both. If you're looking to save more money one of the easiest ways to do this is have a set amount of money deducted from your paycheck each week and put into an investment or a savings account. In a few short weeks you won't even notice the money missing and it will just become your new norm. You may also focus on making more money by attempting to get a promotion at your job, making a job change, or taking on a side hustle.
7. QUIT SMOKING
The number of people smoking has grown to be less and less over the years, however we are seeing more and more people, especially young people taking up vaping. Quitting smoke or vaping is a great goal to have in the new year, it's great cutting out vices and addictions, and if you also have goals of saving more money it will help you achieve those goals as well as nicotine products continue to get more and more expensive and more and more heavily taxed over time. Quitting nicotine can be challenging but take it one step at a time and one day at a time and hopefully you can achieve that goal in 2023.
8. SPEND MORE TIME WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY
These days we seem to be less and less connected to our families, friends, and communities. When people are asked how many friends or how many close relationships they have, the number continues to decline year after year. If you're looking to spend more time with friends and family maybe set a certain day of the week or day of the month to dedicate to friends or family. Make it a routine to pickup the phone and make a call or send a text to a friend or family member. And maybe you're looking to develop more relationships in your life. While it can be difficult to make friends and connections as we get older, try to join a meetup group or workout club or sports team, put yourself out there around people with similar interests and you're chances of building new friendships and relationships will go up substantially.
9. TRAVEL MORE
Another common New Year's Resolution is traveling more. This one could be tough this year, with inflation being out of control people have less disposable income to travel. The cost or airlines continues to rise as well. Traveling doesn't have to mean leaving the country or expensive trips. There's likely plenty of interesting sights and attractions within a few hours drive of you that you can get out there and see as well.
10. READ MORE
One of the most common New Year's Resolutions that's not a health or fitness goal tends to be reading more. Many people enjoy reading, but we often get stuck in these cycles of go to work, come home, eat dinner, watch tv for three hours and go to bed. Reading more is pretty easy if you get yourself some interesting reading materials and cut out a half hour, or even ten minutes of watching the television and picking up a book. Like we've mentioned with all the other goals and resolutions, come up with something measurable ie I'll read for 15 minutes per night or I'll read 10 pages per night. This will make it much more likey you stick to this goal.
