What is Berberine?

Berberine is an alkaloid found in the bark, leaves, roots, and stem of a variety of plants including barberry, oregon grape, and tree turmeric. Berberine has long been used as an antimicrobial, antiprotozoal, and antidiarrheal agent in both Ayurvedic and Chinese Medicine. Today Berberine is a popular supplement among diabetics as it has been found to promote the proliferation of insulin cells and to help control blood sugar levels.

WHAT IS BERBERINE USED FOR?

Berberine has a variety of uses. In addition to having antimicrobial and antiprotozoal effects, Berberine is also used for diabetes, high levels of cholesterol, and other fats in the blood as well a high blood pressure.

WHEN IS THE BEST TIME TO TAKE BERBERINE?

Berberine is typically divided into 3-4 doses daily and is most effective when taken with a meal or shortly after a meal to take advantage of the blood glucose and libid spike associated with eating. It's also broken up into divided doses as taking too much berberine at once can lead to upset stomach, cramping and even diarrhea.

DOES BERBERINE HELP WITH WEIGHT LOSS?

There have been at least 12 studies which have found that berberine can lead to significant reductions in body weight, body mass index, and belly fat. At least two additional studies have shown that taking a berberine supplement over the course of three months results in significant weight loss. This is likely due to berberine's ability to control insulin and other hormones that regulate fat cells.

DOES BERBERINE HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?

Berberine is not known to have many side effects. Common side effects include upset stomach, bloating and diarrhea. These side effects can typically be avoided by taking berberine with food or following a meal and taking it in divided doses.

WHAT IS THE PROPER DOSAGE OF BERBERINE?

Most clinical studies on Berberine have used between 500mg and 1500mg per day. To avoid upset stomach it's best to take Berberine in divided doses and with or following a meal. If you're planning on taking 1500mg of Berberine per day try taking 500mg with breakfast, 500mg with lunch, and 500mg with dinner.
