WHAT IS HIGENAMINE?
Higenamine is a general stimulant and a common ingredient found in many Preworkouts, Fat Burners, and other stimulant based sports nutrition supplements. Higenamine is found in a number of herbs and in recent years it's become a common substitute stimulant for DMHA which is no longer legal in the USA. Higenamine goes by a number of names such as higenamine, norcoclaurine, demethylcoclaurine, aconite, annona squamosal, nandina domestica, and tinospora crispa among others.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF HIGENAMINE?
Higenamine is a stimulant meaning it may increase heart rate, expand airways in the lungs, and widen blood vessels, all things which improve sports performance and athletic performance.
HOW DOES HIGENAMINE WORK?
Research suggests that higenamine works by activating the beta-andrenergic receptors which are responsible for smooth muscle relaxation and heart contractions in similar fashion to other stimulants like ephedrine and caffeine. Andrenergic Receptors are involved in smooth muscle relaxation, heart contractions, controlling musce tone in the respiratory system and controlling blood flow by relaxing or tightening arteries.
According to studies higenamine given orally is rapidly absorbed and reachs peak levels in the blood within 10 minutes, however higenamine is poorly absorbed with only 3-22% entering the blood stream.
DOES HIGENAMINE HAVE SIDE EFFECTS?
Potential Side Effects of Higenamine include increased blood pressure and rapid heart rate.
WHAT IS THE HALF LIFE OF HIGENAMINE?
The only data we could locate on the half life of Higenamine was done with IV injections of higenamine as opposed to higenamine taken orally which tends to be poorly absorbed. That study found that the half life of higenamine was 0.133 hours. The half life of higenamine taken orally is likely less.
IS HIGENAMINE LEGAL?
Higenamine is legal in the USA and Canada, however it is illegal in Australia as of December of 2020.
IS HIGENAMINE BANNED?
Whether Higenamine is banned or not depends on what sports and/or governing bodies your sport or activity falls under. Higenamine is banned by the World Doping Agency (WADA), it's also on the NCA Banned Substances list meaning college athletes cannot take supplements containing Higenamine.
